Abelardo Morell’s Island of Rota
The Island of Rota, is a limited edition artist’s book published by The Library Council of the Museum of Modern Art in Fall of 2010. The book brings together the unique work of three prominent visionaries of our day; designer Ted Muehling, writer and neurologist Oliver Sacks, and internationally renowned, and locally beloved photographer, Abelardo Morell. This treasure contains handmade papers, maps and 12 cliché verres by Morell which are bound into the work. A thirteenth photo, suitable for framing, is included in the box. The Island of Rota is a limited edition of one hundred and thirty-five. Seventy-five copies were reserved for members of The Library Council and thirty copies were given to the three collaborators. All copies are signed and numbered.

This gorgeous 20” x 24” photograph, "Irrigator’s Tarp Directing Water, Fourth of July Creek Ranch, Custer County, Idaho, 2004,” was taken during Laura McPhee’s two-year residency in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. Signed and dated by the artist, it is part of her River of No Return series – a collection of forty photographs exhibited by The Museum of Fine Arts in 2006. McPhee’s Idaho work captures images that address Americans' conflicting ideas about landscape, land use, and our relationship to the natural world. Her work is included in the public collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has been exhibited at the DeCordova and Smithsonian Museums.
