CAVERLY AWARD

Since 1984, the Ernest R. Caverly Award has been presented to Brookline educators in recognition of professional achievements and contributions to the Brookline Public Schools. Two awards are given annually: one to a high school educator and one to an elementary school educator. The educators receiving the awards are designated as Ernest R. Caverly Associates in recognition of their dedication to the ideals of Dr. Ernest R. Caverly, a distinguished public school leader, educator, and Brookline Schools Superintendent (1931–1964).

In 2011, the Brookline Education Foundation was proud to honor the following outstanding exemplars of Excellence in Teaching:

RICHARD CASS JR.

Rick Cass has taught children with special needs for 29 years, including thirteen at Devotion School and the past four at Driscoll School. Known for his unassuming nature, Rick likes to say that he is “in the kid business.” It is a business at which he excels.

Two signs in his classroom capture Rick’s teaching philosophy: “Smart takes time and effort” and “Practice makes better.” These signs and Rick’s loving tutelage “make me feel like there is a point in trying,” says a Learning Center student.

Colleagues describe Rick as an excellent teacher and generous collaborator. “Rick demonstrates what inclusion looks like as he leads lessons, previews and reviews big ideas, and repeats key information for all students. He works with students and teachers with an enthusiasm that brings vibrancy and energy to the classroom and benefits all learners.”

LISA REDDING

In the ten years she has been teaching mathematics at Brookline High School, Lisa Redding has rewritten curriculum, helped to create a Math Center to support struggling students, worked on improving transitions for honors level classes, and inspired hundreds of students with her passion for math.

“Lisa is the teacher I aspire to be,” admits a fellow educator. “She infuses humor, intensity, creativity, and thoughtfulness into every class she teaches.”  “I have watched her push, cajole and support 9th graders … scaffolding highly challenging math problems, but ultimately helping them to do the work on their own,” marvels a colleague.

The parent of a 9th grade student describes with gratitude how Lisa motivates students. “She has cultivated the delicate balance of knowing how to push students to learn well and work hard without breaking their spirit.”
