Programs
April 6, 2011, marked the 30th anniversary of the Brookline Education Foundation’s incorporation. We are proud to say that, after three decades of tireless volunteer work and strong financial support by generations of Brookline residents, the BEF is still going strong!
Since 1981, BEF grants and programs have been powerful tools for innovation and
excellence in teaching and learning in Brookline classrooms. The BEF has committed over $230,500 in funding for its grants and program-related activities for the 2011-12 school year.
|
Teacher Grants |
| |
The BEF has approved over $34,000 in Teacher Grant funding for fourteen grants directly benefiting twenty-five teachers and specialists for the 2011–12 school year. A complete list of these Teacher Grants is included in this report. |
Collaborative Grants |
| |
Collaborative Grant funding totaling over $84,000 has been awarded for the 2011–12 school year to support nine grants that directly involve more than one hundred forty educators and hundreds of students. A complete list of Collaborative Grants is included in this report. |
Systemwide Grants |
| |
In the upcoming year, the BEF is supporting ten Systemwide Grants totaling $80,000. Twoexciting new grants fund innovations in English Language Arts and Performing Arts. The first focuses on K-8 ELA assessment and response to intervention. The second provides for integration of technology into the music curriculum in all grades. A third new grant funds training in Responsive Classroom 2 (a social curriculum) and begins to build the capacity for the Brookline school system to provide its own RC training. A detailed list of Systemwide Grants is included in this report.

Fundraising |
| |
Thanks to the continued generosity of our many supporters, we anticipate raising over $500,000 this year. The additional funds raised by our 30th Anniversary Gala and Auction will allow us to increase the impact of our grants and programs over the next several years.
30th Anniversary Gala and Auction
On April 9, 2011, the BEF hosted a Gala to celebrate 30 years of fostering innovation and achievement in Brookline schools. Our silent and live auctions and “Fund a Need” paddles raised over $162,000. Many individuals, businesses, and artists donated amazing items to our auctions. We are extremely grateful for their extraordinary support as well as the remarkable generosity of auction purchasers.
|
Spelling Bees |
| |
The Adult Spelling Bee went on hiatus this year in order to give BEF volunteers and staff time and energy to devote to our 30th anniversary celebration.
Our annual Fifth Grade Spelling Bee was held in March. The first-place winner was Siddharth Baphna from Lincoln School, who secured victory by correctly spelling the word “pasteurize.” The runners-up were Ethan Jampel, also from Lincoln School, and Eunice Park from Devotion School. |
Raffle |
| |
The BEF conducted its seventh raffle this year and, once again, all 1200 tickets were sold! The winning ticket belonged to Mi-Hyon Cho of Hopewell Junction, NJ.
Thank you to the many parents, teachers, Brookline residents, and others who purchased raffle tickets in support of the BEF and the public schools that are so vital to our town! We greatly appreciate the continued support of our business points of sale: Audy’s Mobil Service Stations, Brookline Booksmith, The Childrens Bookshop, Connelly Hardware, and Party Favors. |
